British developmental biologist (1905–1975) who coined the "epigenetic landscape" — a marble rolling down a hillside of branching valleys — as a picture for how a cell commits to one developmental fate among many, and who organized the *Towards a Theoretical Biology* symposia at the Villa Serbelloni (1966–68) bringing biologists into contact with the era's systems thinkers.

Matters to this vault as the person at the center of a live cross-domain bridge: his 1957 landscape metaphor was decades later given literal mathematical form as a [[entity-john-hopfield|Hopfield]]-network energy surface with cell types as attractors ([[claim-hopfield-network-formalizes-waddington-epigenetic-landscape]]), and separately reconstructed directly from single-cell gene-expression data ([[claim-cislo-siggia-2025-fit-waddington-landscape-directly-to-single-cell-gene-expression]]). His own self-reported intellectual debt to cybernetics is more layered than the secondary literature suggests: he names [[entity-norbert-wiener|Wiener]]'s cybernetics explicitly, but only in a 1977 retrospective essay ([[claim-waddington-1977-whitehead-essay-names-wiener-cybernetics-as-lineage]]) — his own working-scientist texts from 1957 and 1968, including a chapter literally titled "The Cybernetics of Development," instead credit [[entity-w-ross-ashby|Ashby]], Turing, and von Neumann, and never name Wiener at all ([[claim-waddington-1957-cybernetics-of-development-chapter-credits-ashby-not-wiener]], [[claim-waddington-1968-nature-symposia-account-omits-wiener-and-cybernetics]]).
