German pacifist journalist (1889–1938) who exposed Germany's secret illegal rearmament in the late 1920s, was imprisoned by the Nazis, and was awarded the 1935 Nobel Peace Prize in 1936 while still in custody — an award controversial enough that Norway's royal family stayed away from the ceremony. He died in 1938 of tuberculosis contracted during his imprisonment, having never been allowed to collect the prize in person.

Matters to this vault as the connecting node the Norwegian Nobel Committee itself named between two previously separate clusters: its own 2017 statement on [[entity-liu-xiaobo|Liu Xiaobo]]'s death in custody placed Liu in an explicit "heritage" running back to Ossietzky, and Hitler's resulting decree banning German nationals from accepting any Nobel Prize went on to force two unrelated scientists, [[entity-gerhard-domagk|Gerhard Domagk]] and [[entity-richard-kuhn|Richard Kuhn]], into declines of their own.

## Updates

- 2026-09-13: the pairing with [[entity-andrei-sakharov|Andrei Sakharov]] now
confirmed to recur across three separately authored, separately occasioned
Tier-1 Committee texts (2001 institutional history, 2010 ceremony speech,
  2017 death statement) — not a one-off framing invented for Liu Xiaobo's
obituary. Separately, Hitler's 1937 decree is now confirmed to have
mechanically caught exactly three other laureates — Kuhn, Butenandt, and
Domagk — per the Committee's own institutional history.

  [[claim-hitler-decree-closed-set-of-three-kuhn-butenandt-domagk]])
- 2026-09-15: a fourth, and now earliest, independent Committee text pairing
him with Sakharov has surfaced — Aase Lionaes's 1975 Presentation Speech at
Sakharov's own award ceremony, naming Ossietzky as the precedent for a
laureate "prevented from being present," 26 years before Lundestad's 2001
  history. ([[claim-lionaes-1975-presentation-speech-first-paired-sakharov-and-ossietzky]])
