English mathematician and inventor (1791–1871) whose Difference Engine and unbuilt Analytical Engine designs are foundational to the history of mechanical computation. Stanley Jevons's own 1870 paper explicitly frames the Logic Piano as extending Babbage's arithmetic mechanization into logic: "It was reserved for the profound genius of Mr. Babbage to make the greatest advance in mechanical calculation... I venture to look upon the logical machine which I am about to describe as equally a result [of the same spirit of mechanization]."
