American computer scientist, co-author with
[[entity-h-t-kung|H.T. Kung]] of "Systolic Arrays (for VLSI)" (*Sparse
Matrix Proceedings 1978*, SIAM, 1979, pp. 256-282) — the paper Kung's own
1982 article cites as reference [5] and credits as the origin of the
systolic-array concept it explains. Widely known outside this vault's
scope as a longtime MIT computer science professor and as a co-author of
the standard algorithms textbook *Introduction to Algorithms* (CLRS).

Matters to this vault as the co-inventor half of the systolic-array
origin story: every claim-note in the vault's systolic-array/TPU/cardiac-
metaphor cluster traces back to the 1978 Kung–Leiserson paper as its
starting point, even though the cluster's direct sourcing so far has
been to Kung's later, sole-authored 1982 explanation of the idea. The
1978/79 Kung–Leiserson paper itself is not yet read directly in this
vault — a DTIC-hosted copy (ADA066060) returned HTTP 403 in the
2026-08-12 session — and is the most likely home of the original
phrasing behind the popular but misattributed "processor... pumps data
in and out" quote (see [[myth-kung-1982-processor-pumps-quote]]).
