British wartime official who, under cover of an "obscure" Ministry of Supply post, secretly equipped British agents with disguised escape-and-evasion gadgets — shaving brushes with hidden cavities, saw-edged shoelaces, and similar concealment devices.

He matters to this vault as the identified real-life model for James Bond's gadget-supplying quartermaster "Q," per Fleming biographer Andrew Lycett — one half of the same wartime-Naval-Intelligence-Division office (alongside [[entity-john-godfrey|John Godfrey]] as the model for "M") that Ian Fleming fictionalized twice over.

## References
- [[claim-fraser-smith-real-life-model-for-bond-q]] — the Q identification, plus an unverified detail about his hollow golf balls and *Diamonds Are Forever*.
- [[question-verify-fraser-smith-golf-balls-diamonds-are-forever]] — the open verification on that detail (now answered — see claim-note's audit_status).
- [[claim-diamonds-are-forever-golf-ball-device-corroborated-independently]] — a Bond-specialist source is Tier-3 evidence that the golf-ball device is genuinely in the 1956 novel, but attributes it to naval intelligence generally rather than to Fraser-Smith by name.
- [[claim-fraser-smith-memoir-golf-ball-quote-unverified-primary]] — 2026-10-01: Fraser-Smith's own 1981 memoir reportedly records him complaining that Fleming "misused" the golf-ball idea (per a blog's quotation of p. 128), the strongest lead yet toward a primary confirmation — not yet independently verified.

## Updates

- 2026-10-05: a third source, independent of both Harper's blog and
History.com/Lycett, corroborates the golf-ball gadget and the general
Fleming/Q modeling claim — the Croxley Green History Project, a
Hertfordshire local-history site that cites Fraser-Smith's own memoir and
David Porter's biography as its sources without quoting either. It does
not mention Fleming "misusing" the idea and never names *Diamonds Are
  Forever* ([[claim-croxley-green-corroborates-fraser-smith-golf-balls-and-q-identification]]).
- 2026-10-02 (propagation-repair): the golf-ball reference line above was
corrected in place to match the claim-note's own downgrade. Was: a
Bond-specialist source "confirms the golf-ball device is genuinely in the
1956 novel." Now: that source "is Tier-3 evidence that" the device is in the
novel — one Tier-3 specialist site's plot summary is evidence for a novel's
contents, not confirmation of them, and the claim still rests on a single
  root (`independent_roots: 1`). The naval-intelligence-rather-than-Fraser-Smith
half of the line is unaffected and stands.
