American mathematician and electrical engineer (1916–2001), the founder of
**information theory**: his 1948 "A Mathematical Theory of Communication"
defined the bit, gave *channel capacity* its precise meaning, and set the
mathematical limits of what a communication channel can carry. As a graduate
student he had already shown (his 1937 MIT master's thesis) that Boolean
algebra could describe electrical **switching circuits** — the result that made
digital logic design a mathematics — and in 1950, with E. F. Moore, he built
the **first Hex-playing machine**, an analog device that read its move off the
saddle point of an electric potential field rather than by search.

In this vault Shannon is a hub not because any one capture leaned on him, but
because the whole-file view shows him load-bearing across several otherwise
disconnected clusters — the cross-cluster case a per-capture entity-candidate
step cannot weigh (the same reason [[entity-frederic-bartlett]] earned a page).
He is the **direct subject/builder** in the Hex/analog-computing thread; the
named conversational stimulus for Nash's 1952 RAND game-machines report in the
RAND game-theory thread; and, in a genuinely separate source community, the
**framework-originator** whose information theory Miller (1956) imports into
psychophysics and whose "channel capacity" the Admiralty-Code source-rating
lineage descends from. His switching-circuit logic is the modern anchor of the
Jevons logic-machine lineage, and "(Shannon) information of the activations" is
a reference point in the deep-net critical-periods / Information-Bottleneck
debate. Only the machine (Hex) note treats him as the subject of its claim; the
rest are his *ideas* being imported by others — which is exactly what a
foundational figure's footprint looks like, and why the flood-averse
per-capture writers kept holding him back one mention at a time.
