Cleveland Abbe
American meteorologist (1838–1916), often called the "father of the U.S. Weather Bureau" for his pioneering daily weather forecasts and his later role shaping the civilian weather service. Matters to this vault as William B. Hazen's own subordinate — Chief Meteorologist of the Signal Service under Hazen — whose memorial obituary in Popular Science Monthly (May 1887, written within months of Hazen's death) is now a Tier 2 source independently corroborating the Smithsonian's archival account of Hazen's 1885 court-martial: both describe the episode as Hazen exposing the War Department's own failure to support the Greely rescue, not Hazen answering for the expedition's mishandling (claim-hazen-1885-court-martial-was-for-criticizing-lincoln-not-the-expedition-disaster). A contemporary eyewitness account from someone who knew Hazen directly, written before Cooper's 2005 biography or Wikipedia existed.
