The neural-network research tradition — computation as learned weights across
simple units — running from Rosenblatt's perceptron through the 1986 PDP
revival to modern deep learning. The vault's load-bearing use is the
myth-ledger question of the "connectionist winter": whether Minsky–Papert's
*Perceptrons* (1969) actually killed the field or merely coincided with a
funding drought (the sterility claim was a conjecture, and Widrow among others
abandoned multilayer training for other reasons). It is also the tradition
Dreyfus came to count as *vindicating* his critique of symbolic AI rather than
falling to it.
