American mathematician and President of the International Mathematical
Union (1975–1978).

Matters to this vault as the IMU officer who, per Olli Lehto's official IMU
history, appointed Armand Borel as Consultative Committee chairman over
Pontryagin's objection and chaired the Fields Medal Committee that selected
Grigory Margulis in 1978 — a second Pontryagin antagonist, alongside
[[entity-k-chandrasekharan|K. Chandrasekharan]], in the same institutional
episode.
