Dennis Lehmkuhl

Historian and philosopher of physics known for two results on how to interpret general relativity's own formalism. His 2008 chapter "Is spacetime a gravitational field?" set out a three-way taxonomy of positions — geometric, field, and "egalitarian" readings of the relation between gravity and geometry — and defended a "weak egalitarianism," on which every object in GR's mathematics carries both geometric and gravitational significance at once, with neither reading prior to the other. His 2014 paper "Why Einstein did not believe that general relativity geometrizes gravity" reconstructed Einstein's own preferred reading: a "unificationist" view treating gravity and inertia as two aspects of one field, on analogy with the electric and magnetic fields in special relativity.

The vault met Lehmkuhl through Antonio Ferreiro and Andrea Cavallaro's 2026 preprint (arXiv:2610.10588), which extends both of his readings into quantum field theory on curved spacetime: the egalitarian reading gains a third, material axis in claim-ferreiro-cavallaro-2026-metric-gains-material-significance-egalitarian-reading, and the unificationist reading generates a dilemma for the classical matter/spacetime divide in claim-ferreiro-cavallaro-2026-unificationist-dilemma-matter-spacetime-divide. Neither of Lehmkuhl's own 2008 or 2014 papers has been independently read by this vault yet — both are cited only as reconstructed inside the 2026 paper.
