The discipline of authenticating a document by comparing its internal, hard-to-fake features — script, seals, materials, formulaic structure — against securely dated exemplars, rather than trusting the document's own self-claim or a received attribution. Founded in 1681 by the Benedictine monk [[entity-jean-mabillon|Jean Mabillon]] to refute a Jesuit's charge that the Church's own charters were forgeries, it became the ancestor of paleography and forensic document study. This vault has accumulated a genuine cluster of claim-notes performing the same evidentiary act across unrelated centuries and materials — chemical forgery detection in art, priority disputes in the history of mathematics, and (as of 2026-08-14) a computer-history authentication case — without ever gathering it into one hub until this page.
