Condensed-matter physicist at the University of Geneva who, jointly with
Jorge Hirsch, authored the technical critiques concluding that Ranga Dias's
published carbonaceous-sulfur-hydride susceptibility data were not obtained
by the method the paper described, and are statistically inconsistent with a
genuine background subtraction. Matters to this vault as Hirsch's essential
co-author on the joint statement that the retracted data required
"procedures that can only be characterised as data alteration and
manipulation" — a quote a 2026-07-10 vault audit misattributed to a
non-existent "Reyer van der Marel," corrected here to Dirk van der Marel per
Chemistry World's own reporting (2026-08-09).
