Donald E. Knuth

Donald Ervin Knuth (b. 1938) is an American computer scientist, author of The Art of Computer Programming and creator of the TeX typesetting system, and a foundational figure in the analysis of algorithms. He was a colleague of George Forsythe's at Stanford, where he spent most of his career.

In this vault Knuth appears as the eyewitness primary source who resolves the "did Forsythe coin computer science?" question. His 1972 Communications of the ACM tribute — "George Forsythe and the Development of Computer Science," written five months after Forsythe's death with Forsythe's correspondence files in hand — is the Tier-1 document that establishes both that Forsythe did not invent the term and that Louis Fein perceived the discipline's institutional rise earlier. It is a model of a witness who carefully separates influence over a term's adoption from invention of it.
