MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory, founded and long directed by
[[entity-charles-stark-draper|Charles Stark Draper]], developed inertial
guidance for the Polaris and Poseidon submarine-launched missiles and the
Apollo Guidance Computer. By fiscal 1968, it and Lincoln Laboratory together
accounted for roughly 56% of MIT's total budget ($120M of $214M, per MIT's
own [[claim-mit-pounds-panel-1969-fy1968-special-labs-budget-120m-of-214m|1969
Pounds Panel report]]) — a concentration that made MIT a focal point of
Vietnam-era anti-military-research protest. MIT's 1969 institutional review
of the lab (the Pounds Panel) initially recommended it remain part of MIT;
several years later, in 1973, MIT severed the affiliation, and the lab was
reconstituted as the independent nonprofit Charles Stark Draper Laboratory,
Inc., the same referent under a new name and legal form. Load-bearing across
this vault's central MIT/Vietnam-era military-funding thread, this org has
earned a hub of its own rather than resting inside the person page alone.
