Structural biologist (University of Virginia), a specialist in cryo-EM
reconstruction of helical protein filaments, and co-author with Nikhil
Malvankar on both papers that overturned the *Geobacter* conductive-pili model:
the OmcS cytochrome-filament structure (*Cell*, 2019) and the secretory-pili
structure (*Nature*, 2021). Matters to this vault as the methodological engine
behind the reversal — the *Geobacter* nanowire question flipped when cryo-EM
could image the filament directly rather than infer its composition, and Egelman
is the recurring cryo-EM name on both resolved structures.
