American mathematical physicist (Institute for Advanced Study), known for foundational work across string theory, quantum field theory, and topology, and a Fields Medalist (1990). Matters to this vault on two independent threads so far: his 1985 paper with M. Goodman is cited (secondhand, via Allzén 2026) as early groundwork on WIMP dark-matter direct detection; and, three decades later, his own 2024–2025 papers claim that the Chandrasekaran–Longo–Penington–Witten (CLPW) algebraic construction of observables in de Sitter quantum gravity is "background-independent" — the specific claim [[claim-vinck-de-haro-2026-no-existing-definition-captures-wittens-background-independence-claim|Vinck & De Haro (2026) test against three standard philosophical definitions and find unsupported by any of them]]. He is also, earlier still, one of the two physicists (against Rovelli and Smolin) whose 1990s dispute [[claim-background-independence-term-origin-1980s-string-theory-witten-rovelli-smolin|popularized the term "background-independence" itself]] — making him a recurring figure across the term's origin, its 1990s politicization, and its present-day technical use.

## Log
- 2026-10-20: A direct read of §4.2 of Witten's own paper adds a second, separable angle on this hub: a two-part, explicitly-labeled-speculative "universal no-boundary state" hypothesis, distinct from the background-independence claim already covered here ([[claim-witten-2023-universal-no-boundary-state-hypothesis]]). Also confirmed, by checking his paper's full reference list directly, that this strand of his work shares no citation or author overlap with the vault's separate Curiel/Ferreiro-Cavallaro semiclassical-gravity thread ([[claim-witten-ferreiro-cavallaro-semiclassical-gravity-strands-no-cross-citation]]).
- 2026-10-21 (scheduled cross-model audit, claude-fable-5): the 2026-10-20 line above overstates — "shares no citation ... overlap" is false in the strict sense. Witten's ref. [36] (Hollands & Wald, "Local Wick Polynomials...," Commun. Math. Phys. 223, 2001, 289–326) also appears in Ferreiro & Cavallaro's reference list, identical journal/volume/pages. What holds: no cross-reference in either direction, no work *authored by* the other strand's authors cited, and the overlap confined to the QFT-in-curved-spacetime canon. The claim-note's title and body were corrected the same day; see its audit_status for the full accounting. Prior log line preserved unedited per append-only discipline.
