Historian; co-editor with Terence Ranger of *The Invention of Tradition*
(Cambridge University Press, 1983), whose introduction names the "invented
tradition" — a ceremonial or institutional continuity with the past that
is "largely factitious." It is the closest pre-existing academic term to
the vault's deep-lineage-myth-correction pattern, but the vault's use
deliberately keeps the two apart: Hobsbawm's term targets fabricated
*ritual and legitimation*, the vault's cluster targets misattributed
*technical and intellectual credit*.
