Philosopher and mathematical physicist who proved, in a 2019 paper, that no
tensor built from the metric and spacetime curvature can satisfy the full set
of conditions a classical "gravitational stress-energy tensor" would need —
among them, being non-zero wherever curvature is non-zero while also staying
covariantly divergence-free and dimensionally weight-zero under a constant
rescaling of the metric. The theorem is a central result in the philosophy of
general relativity's long-running debate over whether gravitational energy is
a coherent notion at all (pseudo-tensors, Bondi flux, the "no local
gravitational energy" tradition).

The vault met Curiel through [[claim-ferreiro-cavallaro-2026-qft-renormalization-yields-gravitational-stress-energy-tensor]],
a 2026 preprint by Antonio Ferreiro and Andrea Cavallaro arguing
his classical non-existence proof breaks down once matter fields are
quantized on curved spacetime — the whole paper is built as a direct answer to
this one theorem, which is why it is flagged first among that capture's entity
candidates, ahead of the 2026 paper's own authors. Whether the 2026 paper's
reconstruction of Curiel's own argument (their Theorem 1) matches his
published text has not yet been independently checked by this vault — see
[[question-verify-curiel-2019-non-existence-theorem-reconstruction]].

## Log
- 2026-10-11: Page created on promotion of the arXiv:2610.10588 capture. Curiel's 2019 non-existence theorem is the classical result the entire captured paper argues breaks down semiclassically; his own paper has not yet been independently read by this vault.
- 2026-10-20: A separate 2026 physics.hist-ph thread touching the same broad "semiclassical gravity" label — [[entity-edward-witten|Witten's]] algebraic no-boundary-state program and [[claim-vinck-de-haro-2026-no-existing-definition-captures-wittens-background-independence-claim|Vinck & De Haro's]] review of it — cites no work by Curiel, confirmed by a direct read of both documents' full reference lists. Curiel's influence, as far as the vault has read, stays confined to the Ferreiro/Cavallaro branch; it has not reached the Witten/CLPW branch ([[claim-witten-ferreiro-cavallaro-semiclassical-gravity-strands-no-cross-citation]]).
- 2026-10-14: Vault's first independent, direct read of Curiel's own 2019 paper (previously only reconstructed via Ferreiro & Cavallaro's citation of it) found his deflationary reading of T. Padmanabhan's thermodynamic derivation and his acknowledged review by Ted Jacobson — the one documented contact point between this theorem and the thermodynamic-gravity program ([[claim-curiel-2019-engages-padmanabhan-jacobson-thermodynamic-gravity]]). The five-condition side-by-side comparison [[question-verify-curiel-2019-non-existence-theorem-reconstruction]] asks for still was not performed this session.
- 2026-10-15: The five-condition side-by-side comparison was finally performed: Ferreiro & Cavallaro's reconstructed "Theorem 1" matches Curiel's own Condition 6.3, Lemma 6.2, Theorem 7.1, and Corollary 7.2 condition-for-condition, including the weight-zero premise their 2026 argument depends on breaking — Curiel's own content is just distributed across four numbered results rather than one unified theorem ([[claim-curiel-2019-non-existence-theorem-matches-ferreiro-cavallaro-reconstruction]]). This discharges the single-source concentration cap on arXiv:2610.10588 for the whole branch.
