Ernst Mayr (1904–2005) was the evolutionary biologist whose population-genetic model of speciation supplied the mechanism that Eldredge and Gould's [[entity-punctuated-equilibrium|punctuated equilibrium]] later applied to the fossil record — which is why disambiguating *which* Mayr work grounds that debt matters to the vault. His 1954 chapter "Change of genetic environment and evolution" introduced the "genetic revolution" of small peripherally isolated founder populations and predicted, in the same breath, that this would leave gaps in the fossil record. His 1963 *Animal Species and Evolution* restated the mechanism at monograph length — and is the work Eldredge and Gould actually cite, a distinction the vault had blurred until the 1972 primary was read.
