Eugene Charniak
American computer scientist (Brown University) credited, in Robert P. Goldman's own 1999 paper, as the first to classify plan recognition — inferring an agent's goals from a sequence of observed actions — as a specific form of Peircean abductive inference (with Drew McDermott, 1985), later formalized as Bayesian plan recognition with Goldman (1993). He matters to this vault as the technical ancestor of the "abductive plan recognition" label Wikipedia attaches to ACH-CD — a label the vault had previously traced only to an uncited Wikipedia parenthetical before this session located its real disciplinary origin, independent of and roughly two decades prior to that encyclopedia article. His own 1985 and 1993 texts are not yet read directly by the vault; this page rests on Goldman, Geib & Miller's 1999 report of that lineage.

- 2026-10-04: Page created. Unfamiliar name to the vault before this promotion; passes the person-promotion test as the field-credited originator of a decades-old classification central to this vault's recurring ACH-CD/abduction investigation — a real contribution (a classification later authors cite as foundational), not mere co-authorship on a paper the vault reads.
