Soviet-born mathematician (1924–2014), known for foundational work on
Markov processes and for the Dynkin diagrams used across Lie theory, who
emigrated to the United States in 1976 and spent the rest of his career
at Cornell University.

Matters to this vault, in this cluster, as the archival endpoint of the
1978 ICM memorandum thread: his personal papers at Cornell's library hold
a folder explicitly titled "The Situation in Soviet Mathematics notes and
correspondence, 1978" (Box 29, Folder 8) — the most concrete named lead
toward the memo's own text, unread by any vault session so far, and the
source [[entity-slava-gerovitch|Gerovitch]]'s own research on the memo
draws on.
