Austrian-British economist and political philosopher (1899–1976), awarded the
1974 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, best known for his defense of
market coordination and *spontaneous order*, his 1944 polemic *The Road to
Serfdom*, and his role in the interwar socialist economic-calculation debate.
In 1947 he convened the Mont Pelerin Society, the international
classical-liberal association that recurs across this vault's political-economy
material.

Matters to this vault as the figure Polanyi's priority and substance claims
are measured against, and as the organizing node of the Mont Pelerin thread:
the vault first met him via that Society's 1947 founding

Popper]] were also participants. A direct read of Polanyi's 1951 *Logic of
Liberty* then reframed the received Polanyi–Hayek "break": Polanyi got the term
"spontaneous order" into print first
