George Elmer Forsythe (1917–1972) was an American numerical analyst — a WWII meteorologist turned computational mathematician — who founded and built Stanford University's Computer Science Department, spinning it out of the Mathematics Department as an independent department in January 1965. He is popularly credited with coining the term "computer science" and defined the emerging field, in his 1965 Stanford Technical Report CS26, as "the art and science of exploiting automatic digital computers, and of creating the technology necessary to understand their use."

In this vault Forsythe anchors the case study in how a discipline's *name* gets fused to its most visible *institution-builder*: the primary record (Knuth 1972) shows he did not invent the term "computer science" even though his influence drove its acceptance. His lineage also runs into the vault's numerical-analysis cluster — his PhD student Cleve Moler co-authored LINPACK/EISPACK and built MATLAB.
