George Washington Crile
American surgeon (Cleveland, Ohio) whose early-1900s research confirmed external chest compression restored circulation in dogs (1903) and reported a successful closed-chest cardiac massage in one human case (1904) — decades before Kouwenhoven's 1958 "accidental" discovery of the same effect. He matters to the vault as the earliest figure on record to articulate the mechanism explicitly: a "thoracic pump theory" holding that pressure on the thorax alone drives circulation via the great vessels, not by direct action on the heart. His own paper was not read this session; the quote attributed to him is a secondary review's citation of it, not independently verified.
