Gregor Mendel (1822–1884) was an Augustinian friar and naturalist at the monastery of St. Thomas in Brno whose experiments crossing some 28,000 pea plants, reported in his 1866 paper *Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden* ("Experiments on Plant Hybrids"), established the basic laws of inheritance and are now read as the founding work of genetics — though they were largely ignored until their "rediscovery" around 1900.

In this vault Mendel is not primarily the father of genetics but the *subject* of its founding integrity puzzle: the segregation ratios he reported fit the theoretically predicted values (such as 3:1) so closely that [[entity-r-a-fisher|R. A. Fisher]], re-analyzing them in 1936, judged the fit too good to be ordinary sampling luck. That verdict — genuinely contested to this day, with candidate explanations running from an over-eager assistant to unconscious classification bias — is the earliest anchor of the vault's "suspicious perfection" cluster.
