Soviet-born mathematician awarded the Fields Medal at the 1978 International
Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki for his work on discrete subgroups of
Lie groups, ergodic theory, and combinatorics — but barred from traveling
from the USSR to receive it in person, with Jacques Tits accepting on his
behalf.

Matters to this vault as the figure at the center of its Soviet-antisemitism
institutional-politics cluster: the vault's evidence for his exclusion, and
for who within Soviet and IMU institutions opposed his selection or blocked
his travel, spans three existing claim-notes without, until now, a hub
tying them together.
