Molecular geneticist (1924–2008) who trained in Max Delbrück's bacteriophage group
and spent most of his career at UC Berkeley, and who — in a 1972 *Scientific American*
essay, "Prematurity and Uniqueness in Scientific Discovery" — coined **prematurity** as
an explicit historiographic criterion: a discovery is premature when its implications
cannot be connected by a series of simple logical steps to canonical knowledge.

Matters to this vault as the head of its delayed-vindication cluster: his criterion is
the tool the vault uses to distinguish "a theory that had to wait" stories from one
another. A 2026-09-05 primary read of his own text confirmed the definition almost
verbatim but showed his concept is broader than the vault first recorded — he applies
"premature" prospectively, to hypotheses "whether true or false," not only to
vindicated discoveries.
