Czech playwright and dissident, principal drafter of Czechoslovakia's
Charter 77 human-rights declaration (1977), later the last president of
Czechoslovakia and first president of the Czech Republic.

Matters to this vault as the author, in his own words, of the account that
[[entity-charter-77|Charter 77]] — the document [[entity-charter-08|Charter
08]] explicitly named itself after three decades later — arose not from a
political dispute but from the 1976 trial of an underground rock band, the
Plastic People of the Universe.

- 2026-08-25: Havel's own account, given in a Czech Television interview,
  of the last time he saw fellow Charter 77 spokesman Jan Patočka alive —
  the two held together in StB custody, then separated, Havel kept in
  custody and Patočka let go. A new firsthand-witness role for Havel not

- 2026-08-26: The 2026-08-25 line above originally read "Havel released and
  Patočka not," inverting Havel's own words ("They kept me there and let him
  go"); corrected here during the 2026-08-26 cross-model audit. Havel was
  held in Ruzyně from 14 January to May 1977 and learned of Patočka's death
  from an StB officer there.
