Horace Barlow
British sensory neuroscientist (1921–2020) whose ideas surface in the vault along two independent threads, which is what earns him a hub rather than a mention. The 1961 efficient-coding / redundancy-reduction hypothesis holds that early sensory systems recode input to strip statistical redundancy — confirmed against the 1961 primary in 2026-07 — and lends its name to a 2021 self-supervised ML loss. (The "factorial code" label and center-surround-as-mechanism reading often bundled with "Barlow 1961" are later accretions, not in that chapter; see the correction notes below.) Separately, the 1965 divisive-inhibition model of retinal direction selectivity (with W. R. Levick) is one of the vault's cases of a computational circuit theory whose synaptic wiring was confirmed connectomically only decades later — here, ~46 years later, by Briggman et al. in 2011.
