Self-taught Chinese mathematician (1910–1985) who became one of the 20th century's leading number theorists despite no formal university degree, studying at Cambridge under G.H. Hardy in the 1930s before returning to China.

Matters to this vault as the actual point of direct, personal contact behind China's cybernetics lineage: he attended [[entity-norbert-wiener|Norbert Wiener]]'s 1936 lectures at Tsinghua University, twelve years before Wiener published *Cybernetics* (1948), and his own circle runs forward to [[entity-qian-xuesen|Qian Xuesen]]'s cybernetics work — the two founded China's 1961 Operations Research Division together, with engineer Xu Guozhi, a direct institutional ancestor of the 1962 Control Theory lab at the center of the vault's Song Jian dating dispute ([[claim-wiener-1936-tsinghua-visit-hua-luogeng-direct-contact]], [[claim-qian-xuesen-recruited-song-jian-into-first-china-cybernetics-lab-1962]]).

## Updates
- 2026-10-06: Wang Hongzhe's 2025 primary chapter, read directly for the first time this session, tells a different story about Hua's institutional link to Qian than the one this page opened with (which followed Gary Zhexi Zhang's account: Hua and Qian co-founded a 1961 Operations Research Division together with Xu Guozhi). Per Wang's own text, Qian's operations-research group was founded in 1956 with Xu Guozhi alone — Hua is not named as its co-founder. Hua instead separately set up his own operations-research laboratory at the CAS Mathematics Institute in 1958, which *absorbed* Qian's 1956 group in 1960. Both the 1961 date and the co-founder detail on this page's opening paragraph now have a competing, differently-dated account; neither is independently corroborated by a third source.
