Zhongtang's]] unnamed 1978 European host who supplied Song's group with
cybernetic population-forecasting materials, though no single source yet
names Kwakernaak as that specific host directly.

  resolving around him: A.E. Clark's 2016 essay describes unnamed "Dutch
  authors" of a paper Song Jian encountered at Helsinki in 1978. The
  vault's current best reading favors Geert Jan Olsder and R.C.W. Strijbos
  as the referents (a textual match on "fictional island" framing, and a
  plural matching their two-author paper), but Kwakernaak — co-cited in the
  same Greenhalgh footnote 43 — is not fully ruled out as a second
  candidate for Clark's "authors," since his own 1977 paper's framing has
  not been read directly by any session.

- 2026-08-24: A 2025 University of Twente obituary resolves the identity gap
  this page itself flagged above: this is the same Kwakernaak who founded
  Twente's Systems and Control research group in 1970 and co-wrote *Linear
  Optimal Control Systems* (1972) with Ravi Sivan — "the leading
  international reference" on LQG control for years, per former colleagues.
  He was not a minor figure borrowed for one population-policy paper but the
  discipline's leading textbook author and a group-founding director,
  squarely inside the same field [[entity-john-mccarthy|John McCarthy]]'s
  1973 Lighthill rebuttal dismissed as having "little relevance to AI." The
  same obituary supplies Olsder's group-membership end date (1982) and the

  1977 paper "Application of control theory to population policy" in their

  group, five years before *Just One Child* (2008) ever named him in print.
