Romanian-American mathematician (1903–1990) who founded spline theory in his 1946 two-part paper "Contributions to the Problem of Approximation of Equidistant Data by Analytic Functions," written during WWII war work as an Army mathematician at the [[claim-schoenberg-developed-splines-at-the-ballistic-research-lab-that-built-eniac|Ballistic Research Laboratory in Aberdeen, Maryland]] — the same institution that later housed ENIAC.

Matters to this vault as the connective node between two separate borrowed-vocabulary lineages that both surface in the same 1946 papers: "spline," taken from the shipbuilder's flexible lofting strip ([[claim-spline-was-a-shipbuilders-lofting-tool-before-a-math-object]]), and "graduation," taken from actuarial mortality-table smoothing, which Schoenberg uses in Part A's own title and credits to a named actuarial literature he set out to extend ([[claim-schoenberg-1946-part-a-title-glosses-graduation-as-smoothing]], [[claim-schoenberg-1946-credits-jenkins-1926-greville-1944-as-osculatory-interpolation-predecessors]]). The popular retelling of B-splines reaches almost exclusively for the shipbuilding image; the actuarial half of his own vocabulary is just as present on the page and far less quoted.
