MIT professor emeritus and pioneer of **dataflow computation** — models of
computation where an instruction executes when its data becomes available
rather than by a sequential program counter — who led MIT's Computation
Structures Group from 1963 to 1985; he died in 2026 at 94 (MIT News
obituary, 2026-04-10). Matters to this vault as the implicit "common
ancestor" candidate for two mid-1980s visual-dataflow environments,
[[claim-labview-max-independent-patch-cord-convergence|LabVIEW and Max]]:
multiple claim-notes ask whether either system's inventors knew of or cited
his academic dataflow lineage. So far neither side shows a direct citation —
Puckette's own retrospective essay names no dataflow ancestor at all
([[claim-puckette-max-origins-cite-no-dataflow-ancestor]]), and a
citation-graph lookup on Kodosky's HOPL IV paper (still unread at primary)
does not list Dennis's foundational 1975 paper either
([[claim-kodosky-hopl-reference-list-omits-dennis-citation-unverified-mechanism]]) —
though neither finding is conclusive on its own.

- 2026-08-15: the Kodosky-side block on reading his own HOPL IV paper is now
a confirmed standing condition, not a stale gap — checked across three
sessions (2026-08-12, 2026-08-14, 2026-08-15) via every fetch route, and
this session additionally confirmed via the HOPL IV proceedings table of
contents that no alternate, non-paywalled host exists for any paper in the
volume. Also newly named: the Dennis-ancestry question and the
Brooks/Dreyfus lineage question run the identical vault method (the
argument from silence) at opposite ends of its evidentiary-strength range.
