Sir James Lighthill, FRS, was a British applied mathematician and fluid
dynamicist, best known in the history of artificial intelligence as the author
of *Artificial Intelligence: A General Survey* (1973) — the report commissioned
by the UK Science Research Council that is widely credited with ending most
British university funding for AI research. Within this vault he is the primary
document behind the symbolic-AI half of the 1970s retrenchment: his report
blamed the field's disappointments on the combinatorial explosion of search
spaces rather than on connectionist pessimism, a diagnosis a mathematician would
reach for first, and a distinct funding shock from the *Perceptrons* stall the
vault's myth ledger tracks from the other side.

## Log
- 2026-08-15: Both quotes underlying the two claim-notes above re-confirmed verbatim against a second, independently fetched copy — the report's original hosting venue, Chilton Computing (UKRI STFC heritage archive, p001.htm), which the vault's previously-cited rodsmith.nz PDF is itself a downstream compilation of. The report's 38-name acknowledgment list, read directly, names Minsky and McCarthy but not Newell or Simon ([[claim-lighthill-1973-report-consulted-minsky-mccarthy-not-newell-simon]]).
