Longtime Democratic US Senator from Mississippi and segregationist who
chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee's Internal Security Subcommittee
(SISS), a Cold War-era anti-communist investigative body distinct from,
and contemporaneous with, Joseph McCarthy's own Permanent Subcommittee on
Investigations.

Matters to this vault as the concrete correction to a popular flattening:
Wikipedia's "Ludwik Rajchman was subpoenaed in the McCarthy period"
becomes, on direct read of Rajchman's FBI file, a subpoena issued over
Eastland's own signature as SISS chairman on February 18, 1957 — a
different committee, a different chairman, than the phrase "McCarthy
period" implies to most readers.
