American engineer (1918–2016) who invented magnetic-core computer memory at MIT in the early 1950s and went on to found System Dynamics, a computer-simulation method for modeling feedback in economic, urban, and industrial systems. His 1969 *Urban Dynamics* and 1971 *World Dynamics* — the latter commissioned after he convened a 1970 MIT conference "organized for the Club of Rome" — argued that systems models could produce policy-relevant conclusions that ran against conventional wisdom.

Matters to this vault as the uncredited methodological ancestor of [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]]'s "Sinified cybernetics of population": the same Club-of-Rome modeling lineage Forrester originated is the one Song adapted into China's one-child-policy case eight years later. Forrester also ran his own "counterintuitive" systems argument on a national legislature first — testifying to the US Congress in 1970 that low-income housing programs worsen urban poverty — making him a direct point of comparison for how far a systems model's authority over policy actually extends.

- 2026-09-11: The "invented magnetic-core computer memory" credit in this page's opening line is itself contested. Patent-filing records show Harvard's An Wang filed a core-memory patent in 1949, two years before Forrester's 1951 filing; an MIT course paper built on an original Forrester interview characterizes his public talks as claiming sole "hero inventor" credit "without giving much mention to the rest of the core culture that he was late to join." Both new notes stay flagged and at `seedling` (Tier 3 sourcing, escalation pending). An Wang's own 1970 oral history, read in full, describes Forrester's contribution as a separate later addition, not usurped credit.
