American technologist who built Microsoft's Smart Tags feature (2001) and later ran Google's DAFFIE question-answering knowledge-base project (2005), giving him first-person history inside two of the three early-2000s attempts at machine-readable knowledge he later analyzes.

Matters to this vault as the source, in a 2026 blog retrospective, of the claim that Smart Tags, SharePoint, and DAFFIE all failed on the same three sub-problems — schema design, population, and maintenance — and that only the maintenance sub-problem has a credible answer in 2026's agent-as-maintainer model ([[claim-reynar-three-2001-2005-knowledge-systems-died-on-schema-population-maintenance]]). He discloses he is building a company premised on that answer, a disclosed commercial interest the claim-note flags rather than treats as disinterested analysis.

- 2026-10-14: a follow-up corroboration session found Reynar's own cited source (a 2005 Unisys/Dublin Core case study) checks out independently, but his Smart Tags and DAFFIE sub-claims do not — the contemporaneous record that exists for "Smart Tags" documents a different failure than the one his schema-design argument needs, and DAFFIE has no independent footprint anywhere ([[claim-unisys-2005-dublin-core-case-study-corroborates-sharepoint-maintenance-mechanism]], [[claim-contemporaneous-smart-tags-record-corroborates-browser-not-office-sdk-failure]], [[claim-no-independent-record-of-google-daffie-exists-outside-reynar]]).
- 2026-10-15: a 2010 AOL Inc. press release independently corroborates Reynar's broad Microsoft/Google career outline, but names neither "Smart Tags" nor "DAFFIE" — it names "Google Squared" (launched publicly 2009) for the Google period instead, a different project name whose relationship to DAFFIE is unresolved ([[claim-2010-aol-release-corroborates-reynar-career-not-smart-tags-daffie]]). The same session found his own fuller essay never actually claims the three 2001–2005 projects were "independent" — that word was the vault's own gloss, corrected in place on [[claim-reynar-three-2001-2005-knowledge-systems-died-on-schema-population-maintenance]].
