American computer scientist who coined the term "artificial intelligence" (for the
1956 Dartmouth workshop he co-organized), created the Lisp programming language, and
founded the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory — a founding figure of the
symbolic, knowledge-based approach to AI. He matters to this vault as the insider
witness to the 1973 Lighthill controversy: one of Lighthill's own named consultees,
he wrote a point-by-point rebuttal of the report on his own Stanford venue that the
vault mines for several distinct claims — dismissing control theory as having
"little relevance to AI," conceding the combinatorial-explosion diagnosis, naming
the GPS formalism as a source of AI's "mistaken" published predictions, and
