Aerospace and musculoskeletal physiologist at DLR's Institute of Aerospace
Medicine (Cologne), a decades-long central figure in the study of how
mechanical unloading — in bed rest and in orbit — drives bone and muscle loss.
He is the senior author of the 2026 *npj Microgravity* study that gives this
vault its first site- and instrument-matched spaceflight-vs-bed-rest bone
comparison, and the paper is dedicated to him: he died during its publication
process. He anchors the vault's bed-rest-analog thread as the person behind the
methodology rather than a name in a citation.

> Note (2026-07-25): this is Rittweger's first appearance in the vault. The
> capture that introduced him described him as "cited repeatedly across this
> vault's bed-rest thread," but a search of 30-notes/ found no prior mention —
> the earlier bed-rest notes rest on Morgan et al., Spector/Smith/Sibonga, and
> Stavnichuk et al. The hub is created on his real-world domain centrality and
> as an anchor the existing thread should grow into, not on prior in-vault
> recurrence.
