18th-century Italian-French mathematician (1736–1813) whose calculus of
variations — reformulating mechanics as the extremization of an integral
quantity over a trajectory — became the classical-mechanics groundwork for
later optimization theory.

Matters to this vault as the mathematical ancestor two independent
control-theory historians (Stuart Bennett, Frank L. Lewis) name, separately
and explicitly, as the actual root of 1950s–60s optimal control theory —
displacing the vault's own earlier, unconfirmed hypothesis that Bell Labs
classical control theory (Nyquist, Bode) fed directly into that lineage.
Lagrange multipliers are the mechanism [[entity-lev-pontryagin|Pontryagin]]'s
maximum principle and Bryson's adjoint methods both extend.
