Newton's disciple whose posthumous 1715 *History of Fluxions* used Newton's
own papers and his correspondence with Leibniz to assert Newton's priority
in the calculus dispute — the same evidentiary move as
[[entity-john-wallis|Wallis's]] 1685 Harriot-Descartes ruling, applied
directly to the paradigm case of scientific-priority adjudication, decades
before Ranke.
