Printer of the first-ever printed Talmud tractate — Berakhot, 1483/84 — and,
per Marvin J. Heller's primary scholarship, the actual originator of the
Gemara-center/Rashi-inner-margin/Tosafot-outer-margin page layout that every
subsequent Talmud edition has followed "with rare exceptions." Matters to this
vault because he is the correction the vault's earlier Bomberg framing needed:
the layout is his, not Bomberg's; Bomberg's later, far more famous *editio
princeps* used Soncino's layout and is independently credited only with fixing
the standard pagination.
