Mathematician who served as Secretary of the International Mathematical
Union (1961–1966) and whose own handwritten "Prehistory of the IMU" article
is, per Olli Lehto's account, what prompted Lehto to write the IMU's full
official history in the first place.

Matters to this vault as the figure who rebutted Lev Pontryagin's objection
to Grigory Margulis's 1978 Fields Medal at the IMU Executive Committee's May
1978 Paris luncheon, "with the full support of all the others present" —
the institutional counterweight the whole Pontryagin/Margulis episode is
measured against in
[[claim-pontryagin-opposed-margulis-fields-medal-at-imu-executive-committee-paris-1978]].
His precise title at the time of that luncheon (the earlier promotion of
that claim-note called him "IMU President," which conflicts with
[[entity-deane-montgomery|Deane Montgomery]] holding that office 1975–1978)
is unconfirmed — see
[[question-verify-chandrasekharan-title-1978-paris-imu-executive-committee]].
