German cybernetician and computer scientist at the Technische Hochschule
Karlsruhe, inventor (from 1959) of the "Learning Matrix," an early adaptive
pattern-classification device. Matters to this vault as the direct
comparison point in Steinbuch & Widrow's 1965 IEEE paper, which measures the
Learning Matrix against Widrow's Madaline on structure and training cost —
a paper this vault initially suspected, and then directly confirmed was not,
part of Widrow's abandoned 1960s multilayer-training effort
([[claim-steinbuch-widrow-1965-comparison-not-multilayer-training]]).
