American psychiatrist and AI researcher at Stanford who built PARRY, a 1970s computer simulation of paranoid personality validated against real psychiatrists' judgments and published as "Artificial Paranoia" (1971). Matters to this vault as PARRY's creator: the program held a real 1972 ARPANET conversation with [[entity-joseph-weizenbaum|Joseph Weizenbaum]]'s DOCTOR (an ELIZA script), preserved verbatim in [[claim-rfc439-parry-doctor-1972-arpanet-conversation|RFC 439]]. Separately, first flagged in the vault on 2026-09-03: Colby's own 1963 writing sits in the print genealogy of the "hammer and nail" proverb, traced through a 1982 Weizenbaum misquote in a capture not yet promoted to a claim-note.

- 2026-09-05: The 2026-09-03 "hammer and nail" capture is now promoted. Colby's place in the proverb's print genealogy has a claim-note: Quote Investigator credits him, in a 1963 volume, with the earliest computing-inflected version of the figure — "The computer program may be our current hammer, but it must be tried" — nine years before PARRY. - 2026-09-12: Colby's 1971 "Artificial Paranoia" paper (read directly) describes PARRY as an explicit simulated affect-state system and names his own evaluation standard an "indistinguishability test" — his psychiatric-register restatement of Turing's imitation-game criterion — which PARRY passed on a mechanism architecturally opposite to ELIZA's stateless keyword transformation.
