Pattern-recognition researcher and co-editor, with J. F. Lemmer, of *Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence* (North-Holland, 1986) — a foundational proceedings volume the vault already cites via [[claim-heckerman-1986-certainty-factors-require-independence-assumptions]]. Matters to this vault as a recurring, independently-verifiable voice: he appears in two unrelated vault clusters on his own authority, not as a name relayed through someone else's argument.

In a 1993 recollection (quoted in [[entity-yuxi-liu|Yuxi Liu]]'s "The Backstory of Backpropagation," 2023), Kanal — whom Werbos tried to interest in his work in 1975 — recalled receiving a physical copy of Werbos's report "Beyond Regression" and letting it go unread, wondering afterward whether a different title would have caught his attention. That testimony is the cleanest independent (non-Werbos) evidence that the report's early obscurity was a framing problem, not institutional suppression.
