Les Turnbull

North-East England mining historian who wrote the companion historical chapter to Richard Carlton and Alan Williams's 2018 excavation report on the Willington Waggonway (Setting the Standard, ed. Dominique Bell), and who separately authored a 2023 book, The Willington Waggonway (North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, "The Early Railways Collection" no. 7), explicitly framing the find as evidence against the "traditional" Stephenson- and Stockton-and-Darlington-centred history of British railways.

Matters to this vault as a named voice arguing, across two separate publications, that pre-Stephenson Tyneside wagonway practice — not George Stephenson's later career — is where the standard railway gauge actually originates: his own book description states "it is impossible to escape the conclusion that the reputation of the Stockton and Darlington Railway is founded upon ignorance of the railways in service before 1825."
