Soviet mathematician (1908–1988) who, blind from age fourteen after a primus-stove explosion, became a leading topologist and later, with Boltyanskii, Gamkrelidze, and Mishchenko, formulated the **maximum principle** of optimal control theory, announced in 1956 and awarded the Lenin Prize in 1962.

Matters to this vault as the head of the Soviet-side twin lineage to the American Kelley/Bryson/Bellman optimal-control tradition the vault credits as a mathematical precursor to backpropagation ([[claim-kelley-bryson-optimal-control-precursor]], [[moc-backpropagation-origins]]), developed under Cold War pressure with no documented citation contact across the two schools. His own path to the mathematics — following research read aloud by his untrained mother, who improvised spoken glosses for symbols she couldn't name — is itself one of the vault's blind-mathematicians-independently-reinvented-notation thread. - 2026-08-24: Historian Stuart Bennett's 1996 IEEE history describes
  Pontryagin's maximum principle as "the generalization of Hamilton's
  approach to geometric optics" — tracing Pontryagin's own mathematical
  ancestry to Lagrange and Hamilton's 18th–19th-century calculus of
  variations, not to Bell Labs frequency-domain control theory (Nyquist,
  Bode), settling (with a companion primary-source check of Kelley 1960)
  the vault's own previously-open question about that lineage

  separately confirmed Pontryagin personally, vocally opposed Margulis's
  medal at an international IMU Executive Committee luncheon in Paris,

  luncheon account: it dates precisely to May 1978 (not "spring"), and the
  "second-rate mathematician" language is Lehto's own indirect-discourse
  summary of Pontryagin's position, not a verbatim quotation from Pontryagin
  himself — corrected in place on
