Lipman Bers
Latvian-American mathematician (1914–1993), known for work in complex analysis and quasiconformal mappings, and a longtime human-rights activist within the mathematical community, including service as chair of the American Mathematical Society's Committee on Human Rights of Mathematicians.
Matters to this vault as the organizer, per Olli Lehto's own account as Congress chair, of the 1978 Helsinki ICM's human-rights event calling attention to discrimination against Jewish mathematicians in the USSR — the same Congress politics that frame the still-unresolved question of whether a separate fifteen-signer memorandum named Pontryagin individually.
