Mathematician and editor, author of "Kerosinka: An Episode in the History
of Soviet Mathematics" (*Notices of the American Mathematical Society*,
vol. 46, no. 10, November 1999). A secondary account built on named
interviews (acknowledging Edward Frenkel, Dmitri Fuchs, and I.M. Gelfand
among others) and direct citation of A. Shen and A. Vershik. Narrates in
detail Edward Frenkel's 1984 Mekh-mat entrance-exam rejection and his
referral to the "Kerosinka" — one of several Soviet institutes that
absorbed mathematically talented students excluded from Mekh-mat.
